A CHAIN CAFE
They drove to the edge of town.
He reaches his hand to soothe her doubts.
She doesn’t know what thoughts,
have kept him thinking.
Thinking of how he’s tried
to give her the love that she desires,
nights on the couch
waiting for the imposing disaster.
He spoke a bit too loud,
everyone put their teacups down.
In a chain cafe he served it plain,
and what he sips is his and her’s the same,
but from their seats it seems
that love is running out.
They met in the parking lot
after they had their nails pressed on.
Eatin’’ their scones with a wink
masking generous treason.
Mary and Claire quote Chanel.
Sayin’’ to Kim she’s not acting herself.
Passing her pamphlets on Paxil
and cards from their doctors.
Kim spoke a bit too loose,
A little girl watching spilled her juice.
In a chain cafe...
When no one knows what someone’s problem is,
but they make it seem
like its their own personal business
then what is real or just a deep misleading
You’ll never know cuz you’ve been listening
but not breathing.
In a chain cafe...

CONVERSATIONS
Trying to come up
trying to come up,
trying to come up
with conversations
with you.
There was this man saw him move in upstairs
holding long playing records and magazines
The hallway is full of magnets and ropes
tugging at me constantly...
“Tell me what’s your story.”
“Do you like the city?”
“I am a singer an a Mowton boy.”
“Where had you lived and did you like it?”
“I love the springtime and I’m single!“
“What’s your favourite band?”
“Are you the one for me?”
Trying to come up...
Your faucet moans into my train of thought.
The heat of your stove sounds like your bored.
A flickering lamp, an uncomfortable break,
maximizing your desire, minimizing my mistakes.
And like a UPS man driving up on a winter morning,
bringing twentyfive flavours of haagen-dazs.
You were walking home with worried eyes.
“Did you forget your keys?”
“This once happened to me,
I had to climb in through a window to get back in here.”
“So if you’re locked out man, you know I’ve got no plans,
I could order some delivery, I’ve got beer!”
“The Super’s off in Philly, I know that this sounds silly,
But you might have to stay over at my place.”
“I know that space is tight, guess I’ll be polite,
and let you sleep in my bed.”
Trying to come up...
With conversations
with you.

All You're Gonna Get

ALL YOU’RE GONNA GET
Open any store door you take a chance
Check the packaging, trust the brand
Shake it! Take it to the fitting room
flirting in the ways that you know you know.
You know how to take a shirt off
Your skin scratches my flesh
That’s all you’re gonna get from me
That’s all I’m gonna get from you
Holding hands, buyers high
pushing buttons, hearing sighs
In a drawer waiting for the chance to work
Bed warmer, Ken doll, soda jerk
You want a fast connection
all at the lowest price
counting all the ways you were fuelled
and all the ways you were burned
You think that you are the only one?
Well, that’s all you’re gonna get from me
That’s all I’m gonna get from you
bd
Watching Me Watching You
Returned, but its not a clean exchange
different model, no they never stay
any charge can be taken off your bill
impressed less, careless, got your fill!
Go on, keep your distance!
Stay on a shelf!
That’s all you’re gonna get from me
That’s all I’m gonna get from you

Lauren's Theme

LAUREN’S THEME
If there was a Lauren’s Theme
I don’t want you to sing
of woe and misery
of dangerous myths we bring
to wealthy girls from privileged schools
discusted with their lots
Wanting boys stronger than dad
Singing sweeter than mom had
If there is a Lauren’s
There was a Lauren’s theme
thats when the chorus came
In all your fantasies there is a great divide
Smashed on bathroom tile
or watching from the drive
she tried to hide in her big tudor house
Oh was it written on her spine
it said
“In all our dreams, she’ll break or win,
be our new fantasy.”
But when she smiles
with her long brown hair
and her dazzling figure
“In all our dreams, she’ll break or win,
be our new fantasy.”
“It will not end, it does not end,
it goes on indefinitely.”

Being Here

BEING HERE
Its easy to say,
Easy to fool,
Easy to hold onto,
Being here.
There’s places to hide,
in handshakes and ties
while standing inside your shoes
just being here.
Contrapposto at the wedding,
Martini glass as your cane
Cracking quips lost on suits, drifting,
till you’re poking your eye out again
Its easy to say,
Easy to fool,
Easy to point out who’s
Being here.
Back against back on a mattress,
his family branch fell on their heads
Lightening striking all their fingers
Hovering, listening for spring.
in their tossing breathing clenching
petals are curling behind their smiles
Alone in the park hearing voices,
scratching the rented front door
showered and pressed by 6:30
corner by corner
no infrared prober
just lines on his face, pointing love that away
panic closer at heal, busy polishing wheels,
steering clear, clear, clear
Just being here
